Abstract: Background: Lichen planus and lichenoid mucositis are relatively common conditions in the field of oral medicine. However, it is very uncommon for patients or practitioners to be able to identify triggering or initiating factor of the onset of the conditions. We present a case of lichenoid mucositis associated with full dentures.

Disorders of the oral mucosa commonly occurring in diabetic patients include atrophy of the mucosa, candidiasis (thrush), and lichen planus or lichenoid mucositis. Oral mucositis is a frequent complication of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy1,2. Restated, this is a cutaneous condition usually characterized by a solitary dusky-red to violaceous papular skin lesion. Oral lichenoid drug eruption is an uncommon medication-induced chronic change inside the mouth. It appears the same as idiopathic oral lichen planus clinically and under the microscope , but an oral lichenoid drug eruption resolves if the triggering drug is ceased.

A lichenoid drug eruption is a reaction to a medication. Some of the types of drugs that may trigger this condition include: anticonvulsants, such as carbamazepine (Tegretol) or phenytoin lichenoid reactions histopathologically. Oral lichen planus (OLP) shows a band-like lymphohistiocytic infiltration immediately demolishing the basal cell layer of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium. Oral lichenoid mucositis (OLM) displays the similar histopathological features as OLP, but may have other features as Erosive lichenoid mucositis, suggestive of erosive lichen planus.
Oral lichenoid lesions can be a diagnostic challenge for the pathologist due to the tremendous overlap in the clinical and pathologic presentation of many inflammatory, reactive, and immune -mediated disorders than commonly involve the oral mucosa. Ideally good clinical information will accompany the biopsy specimen

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is commonly found in middle-aged women. Although the cause is unknown, research points to several complex immunologic events and cells that are responsible for the inflammatory destruction and chronicity of these lesions. Biopsy for histologic diagnosis is recommended. 2014-01-01

Oral Lichen Planus: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment Oral lichen planus is a non-infectious, inflammatory condition that affects the membranes inside the mouth, and it's a variation of the skin condition, lichen planus. For some patients, the symptoms are mild, but for others, painful sores and red, inflamed tissues cause discomfort. In cases of lichenoid mucositis or reactions, treatment should be directed at identifying and removing the presumed cause. Given the apparent risk of squamous cell carcinoma in these patients
